This project will involve only myself, and my work.
The aim of this project is to produce a piece of art to be displayed and submitted from home, due to the coronavirus pandemic. This art should relate to the theme of my choosing, which is “undergrowth” and have a completed sketchbook by June 8th. This project is a fair portion of my grade, and as such will be undertaken with the knowledge that I should be investigating and exploring my themes and concepts to the fullest, and be producing a high standard of work at the end, displayed professionally. This being our final year has given us a lot of creative freedom too, as we selected and explored themes of our choosing. Unlike some previous projects, I did not discuss my project and ideas with anyone in the class, as this was not a collaborative show so I wanted to keep my head clear and fresh. I had a few points to consider when choosing a theme and medium, such as size and aesthetics alongside more personal notes like relevance to me. In addition, as such the passion I would be able to put into this work, as I am self-aware enough to know that if I am not fuelled by something, I cannot create art about it. Another complicating factor is the restrictions that the pandemic has placed upon me, it is a difficult time at home and I have little space or resources to utilise. I will have to do what I can with what I have access to. My hope is that I will not only improve my practical skills by doing this project, but also continue a development of what I hope will be a successful artist career. I think it is also a good experience for my peers, and I hope that we all come away from this experience knowing more and having a grasp on what it means to work on a more professional scale with our solo pieces. I started with a vague idea of what direction I wanted to take this in, somewhat continuing from my prior project I wanted to continue exploring natural organic themes with scientific influences. I chose the word undergrowth, in a literal way as I was exploring mycology, but in a broader sense to explore what my world means to me, and begin the journey that would lead me to my final piece. I interpreted physically, looking at forest floors and patterns in nature. In this research, I went out and collected primary research as well as gathering secondary from books and online, and the different variations around the world in relation to my own. Fungi in relationship to itself, nature and even humanity. Semi-continuing from my last project by exploring the notions of balance and stability in nature, about evolution and survival in plant life. For this exhibit, I will be continuing my social media presence on Poppyelphickart art on Instagram, I chose this so that people that were interested in my work previously could see what I am doing currently, and I could garner a greater following from the get go. I plan to use with many hashtags to gain interest from the public, a marketing tool used to target audiences with specific interests, so #Nottingham #art #studentart #nature were some of the targeted hashtags I used on my posts to promote my posts and have them seen by more people. I also proactively spread by word of mouth and via Facebook posts. In terms of marketing to new audiences, I think we should be targeting students as the work is done by students so will give other students an insight onto how our course and our brains have affected our outcomes, and give them a chance to meet other likeminded people and expand their connections, possibly resulting in future collaborations or artist relationships-and the show is free to attend for affordability of access. I think we should be marketing to the art community of Nottinghamshire as a whole, as a little-big city we have a thriving art community and I think this course has a lot of unique talent to contribute to that and we can pro-actively try. There are many stages to this project; and I managed and will manage them all according to their specific needs as tasks;
The long-term implication of this project is hopefully a better understanding of what it means to be a professional artist and work within a set timeframe, alongside as a group an experience of collaborative art and improvement of our ability to participate in any shows in the future. I hope my piece in particular challenges some notions of human life and at least served as perhaps the spark of a conversation about what it meant, as questioning the norm is a healthy indicator of progress in society especially about bio-diversity and environmental issues. As a self-funded project I must be mindful of costs, and as a student I will try to minimise these where I can; but I will acknowledge that this isn’t what I would necessarily do if this was outside funded with a larger budget or more resources and space to work in. I would perhaps use different mediums or processes, but I had allotted a larger budget for this than my previous pieces as this is my final year and I work weekends, allowing me a little more flexibility. I plan to monitor the public reception of my project and to evaluate my achievements from the start and throughout the activity both by reflecting on my sketchbook and by asking any viewers or family and friends that I know have been to the exhibit/ones I encounter during my shift about how they receive and reflect on my work. This will be a little more difficult as it will be done remotely, and mainly online but I still feel like it will be possible to get some helpful feedback.
